Flu Season Visiting Policy

To help prevent the spread of the H1N1 flu, UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children's Hospital are asking patients and visitors, who are experiencing cold and flu symptoms, to postpone non-urgent visits to UCSF.

In addition, UCSF clinics and hospitals are restricting visitors under age 16 from patient care areas during the 2009–2010 flu season. For more information, see the UCSF announcement regarding this visitors policy.

Please postpone your visit if in the past week you've had any of the following symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with these symptoms:

• Cough
• Diarrhea
• Fever (oral temperature greater than 100° F)
• Runny nose
• Sore throat
• Vomiting
• Other cold and flu symptoms

If you are a patient with a non-urgent medical appointment and you're experiencing flu symptoms, please contact your health care provider to reschedule your appointment. This excludes medical appointments for the care of flu symptoms. If you have special circumstances, please speak with your health care provider for assistance before arriving.

We understand that this policy may be inconvenient for some, but we hope you will comply with the policy to help protect the health of our patients and our employees, who care for them.

Visiting Hours

Visiting hours generally are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. but may be more limited in critical care areas.

If you have questions about hospital visiting policies or hours, please check with the nurses in the department or unit.

In special cases, visitors may be allowed to arrive after 8 p.m. After-hours access is limited and all visitors are screened by security. After-hours visits must be approved by the nursing unit. Once approved, visitors will be issued a dated visitors pass that must be worn at all times.
