
The UCSF Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory provides testing services for blood, bone marrow, cornea, heart, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas and small bowel transplants. The lab, which tests blood and tissue for organ compatibility, is one of the largest of its kind in the United States.
Founded in 1981, the laboratory is a national reference laboratory, conducts basic research and provides educational programs for health care professionals.
It is a referee laboratory for the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) proficiency testing, a contract laboratory for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), a core laboratory for the National Institutes of Health Immune Tolerance Network and a participant in several national clinical trials.
Research projects include studies of immunosuppressive drugs, liver assist devices for patients with liver failure, liver regeneration, graft rejection and organ preservation.
