The Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) Follow-Up Program assesses the neurodevelopment of infants after they leave the ICN. The program follows the growth and development of infants who weighed less than 1,500 grams at birth, who required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment to assist breathing, who underwent fetal surgery and who were considered at-risk at birth.
The program provides parent support after babies leave the hospital and provides early detection of developmental disabililties and referral for service, if needed. The program also works with community doctors and agencies involved with the care of the baby and provides information about the infants' condition while in the ICN.
Infants and children are seen in San Francisco as well as in satellite clinics in Clear Lake, Eureka, Salinas, Santa Rosa, Ukiah and Willits, with clinics at other sites as needed.
The core staff includes of a neonatologist, or specialist in critically ill newborns, trained in developmental and behavioral pediatrics, a psychologist, a nurse, a coordinator and a physical therapy consultant.
