Emergency Department

The Emergency Department at UCSF treats children and adults with medical conditions that need immediate attention, ranging from simple but pressing injuries such as cuts and broken bones to life-threatening problems. Care is provided 24 hours a day, serving more than 40,000 patients a year.

Our team includes board-certified emergency medicine specialists, nurses trained in emergency and critical care and other specialists who are called upon as needed in areas such as pediatrics, neurology, orthopedics and surgery.

The Emergency Department features:

  • Newly renovated waiting room, children's play area, television, accessible bathroom facilities and 24-hour security
  • Private exam and treatment rooms
  • Digital radiology suite and computed tomography (CT) scanner
  • Updated computerized tracking system, charting and discharge instructions that help enhance patient privacy, safety and after-care treatment
  • Bedside ultrasound to speed evaluation, when appropriate

We provide "fast track" treatment for minor problems such as ankle sprains, cuts and broken bones. We also practice rapid registration and triage of patients to minimize wait times.
