Continence Clinic

Incontinence can be a frustrating problem for both parents and kids. The staff of the UCSF Children's Continence Clinic treats children with various continence issues, including daytime and nighttime wetting, urinating too often or not enough, constipation and stool problems. We're experienced at determining if there's a physical cause for the problem, and at working with families and children to develop healthy voiding and stooling habits. This helps kids achieve greater continence and prevents urinary tract infections and other problems related to incontinence.

Treatment options include education, behavioral modification, voiding schedules and diaries, conditioning alarms, medications, ultrasound, biofeedback and bladder testing.

The clinic also offers a free seminar, called the Pediatric Urology Parent (PUP) seminar, that gives parents basic information and techniques they can use at home to help their child stay dry. Parents must attend the seminar before making an appointment at the Continence Clinic. After the seminar, you may make an appointment at the clinic, or you can try some of the techniques first and make an appointment, if necessary, at a later date. The PUP seminars are held the second Tuesday of every month from six to seven o'clock in the evening. To reserve a space in the next seminar, call the clinic.

Research and Clinical Trials

Last updated February 3, 2010

The Urology Parent Seminar is an informational seminar that teaches parents how to manage continence issues in post-potty trained children, such as daytime wetting, bedwetting, frequent or difficult urination, constipation and recurrent urinary tract infections. The seminar is free and open to both parents and pediatricians, and is conducted by a pediatric urology nurse practitioner.

Parents must attend the seminar before making an appointment for their child with the Children's Continence Clinic. After the seminar, parents can make an appointment at the clinic, or they can try using some of the techniques they've learned at home first, and make an appointment later if needed.

The seminar takes place on the second Monday of every month. Attendees must pre-register with Shirkeri Badger at (415) 353-2798 for course details, including exact meeting location.
