Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are dentists who specialize in the diagnosis, surgery and treatment of diseases, injuries, defects and aesthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face. Many of our oral and maxillofacial surgeons have medical degrees and general surgery training. They work in collaboration with other specialties including general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, otolaryngology or head and neck surgery and ophthalmology.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is located at UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus. Patients have access to all of the diagnostic facilities of the UCSF Medical Center and its hospitals.
In addition, the program has two clinics -- the Hospital Dentistry Service and Center for Orofacial Pain. At the Hospital Dentistry Service, a hospital-trained general dentist provides routine dentistry for the developmentally disabled, dental phobic or medically compromised patients who receive routine dentistry under general anesthesia in the UCSF Medical Center Surgery Center. This service is of great value to mentally and physically challenged patients.
The Center for Orofacial Pain is available for patients suffering from a variety of facial pains, including temporomandibular joint-related dysfunction. The clinic has access to the treatments and expertise of a pharmacist, psychologist, acupuncturist and physical therapist.
