Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, after cardiovascular disease and cancer, disabling more adults than any other condition. When a stroke occurs, a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked or bursts, sometimes causing permanent brain damage or even death. However, prompt treatment and follow-up care may protect brain cells and help patients lead healthy, productive lives.
The Neurovascular Disease and Stroke Center at UCSF Medical Center has been certified by the national Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) as a primary stroke center, the first in San Francisco to receive this designation.
The UCSF stroke center provides services from diagnosis to determine damage caused by stroke to treatment including surgery and follow-up care. In addition, our experts provide preventive care and screening for high-risk patients.
